Electronic Discharge Summaries

Project lead: Sean Conley

Sean Conley is leading the roll out of Electronic Discharge Summaries (EDS) at Austin Health. The Electronic Discharge Summary at Austin is part of the MedTrak system (now know as TrakCare).

The current EDS system allows; multipoint access across the three campuses of Austin Health, 24/7 access to the EDS without having to chase a medical record, draft and final versioning, the ability to add pathology, diagnostic reports and other internal forms to the EDS. The EDS system within Trak has its own GP database maintained by Austin Health and three delivery methods associated with this.

The number of clinical units using Electronic Discharge Summaries (EDS) at Austin Health has increased by 30 % over the past 14 months.  The EDS tool is now used by 70% of clinical units at Austin Health.

The EDS project has also managed some standardisation of data by only allowing the use of four discharge summary templates across the whole of Austin Health.  ACACI hopes this will allow us to use the data entered into the discharge summary for other clinical purposes in the future.

The future direction of the EDS project will include; the roll out of the tool to the remaining 30% of units at Austin Health, updating of  Rich Text Formatting control within the tool, the addition of a discharge medication ordering system and the availability of HL7 messaging.
